The Long Overdue Are

a quick post with hopefully more to follow sometime soon, I've got a backlog of stuff to get to, but I've had some thing holding up Firefox tabs, and they're as good as any to pass on.

Design By Humans
Another T-shirt voting site, like Threadless or Woot! Shirt, except this one seems to feel a little bit more illustrative and thus awesome. I have beef with Threadless just because there seems to be a Threadless "look", and I'm not a big fan, just saying. I like this site though, plus better payouts to designers.

Circus Museum
This has already made the rounds on the internets some time ago, but I didn't know about until I needed some reference on a circus freak poster. Amazing collection of old circus posters, it's huge and organized, and creepy. just make sure you turn off the sound.

Thinkmule
Jeremy Pruitt is Thinkmule. Thinkmule is awesome. Therefore, you should go look at his site.

Jon Stich
This one courtesy of Melanie of Design Inspirations, his work is pretty rad, definitely worth checking out. unfortunately, his site is in flash and I can't post anything from his site (because I'm too lazy to host it myself)

Jenny Bird Alcantara
Pretty sweet surrealist stuff. Maybe a little bit too derivative of Frida, but I think she's got her own thing going on and it works. Found her by doing a google image search on something ("birds" i think), and ended up seeing her work, which is why you should not have a site in flash while you're still up and coming and never had a feature interview, never know who or how someone might stumble on your site. (flash doesn't get crawled by search engine "spiders" aka your content doesn't get indexed)

And this is just funny: "Atheism vs Christianity: 2.More than likely, they are smarter than you are. This can be difficult to come to grips with, but it does appear to be true and is a claim that is actually supported by the Bible (1 Corinthians 1:18-31)" I'm not gonna comment, but when people admit their faults, it's always nice to see.

The Modern Are

The Imaginary Foundation
These guys are one of my favorite t-shirt designers, if not my favorite, and I don't normally buy new shirts. I am a T-shirt fiend, and I am pretty damn picky. But these guys... these guys are something else. Anyway, they got new designs, joy.

1 year old fleeces art world
Neatorama doles it out:
"To the untrained eye, they appear to be simple daubs that could have been created by a two year old. Which is precisely what they are.

But that didn’t stop the supposed experts falling over themselves to acclaim them.

The toddler in question is Freddie Linsky, who has fooled the art world into buying and asking to exhibit his paintings."

And this is why Modern is bullshit, this is the second time in last few years a child under 5 has made money with abstract art. bah.

Nanami Cowdroy
I want.
Who wants to buy it for me? only $210. seriously, that's sick
(also, Gallery 1988 is having a holiday sale of prints, they are teh goodness.

Niel Gaiman helps fan propose
In yet another example of why Neil Gaimen is pretty bad ass, he helped a fan propose to his girlfriend at a con, which it took the girl 4 times to finally notice what he had written. Also, a little liqour on the ground today as it was recently revealed that Gaimen's partner in writing Good Omens, Terry Pratchett, has a rare form of early Alzheimers, sucks.

if Da Vinci used Photoshop, heh.

The Sunday Are

Peter Bruhn Redefines the Lowercase 'g'

What the font?!?
"Ever seen a font you like but couldn’t identify it? I once knew an Art Director who seemed to be able to identify just about any font I showed him. However, in recent years, even he responds with a “I don’t have a clue”.
So where to turn? Well, rather than publishing my Art Director friend’s email address here, I’ll introduce a few resources to get you started. Although none of the following resources is infallible, they will definitely give you a head start."

Doubled Last Supper might be something
But probably not. Even Da Vinci, genius that he was, could not have conceived of this while painting it. But as it is, and slightly an old story, but for all you Code freaks, it's an interesting theory.

Lost Formats
Sick little page from Experimental Jet Set, group of guys from Amsterdam (check the info page too, worth the read) that catalogs different media formats in simple outlined forms.

A4 vs US Letter
How and why the U.S. uses letter paper (8.5x11), and most of the rest of the world uses A4 (8.26x11.69)...in short, the metric system strikes again.

the Greastest first page ever written.
"Now if I could only find page two. Oddly, it's not on the back of page one. This may be because this was an editor's copy or even the author's original. All I know is I have to know what happens next."

A plea for designers to not take that shitty logo job which pays $100, and the reasons behind it...."Great Design is not stuffing 10 lbs of shit into a 5 lb bag"

And now for some T-shirts: The first is a British group that does what you see below, in a variety of motifs. I'm not gonna comment on the shirt quality (Gildan brand) or the exchange rate of pounds to dollars (2 to 1). The second has a slick look, slick flash site, and is all about designers=rock. And the third takes shirts you see in your favorite movies and makes them a reality, and nothing even close to the formerly ubiquitous "vote for pedro" in terms of exposure. And the fourth? the fourth is teh yes.
